The notion of fair speech expands the idea of ‘free speech’ to incorporate the concept of justice. Indeed, in a context of media concentration, dominant powers (whether political, economic, religious, ideological, etc.) are the most represented and heard (because they are powerful or loud). Fair speech fosters speech equity for other voices that are often marginalised and/or censored to be heard. Fair speech therefore promotes an equitable access to expression (for example for women, historically marginalised groups, etc.), enabling an authentic diversity of voices. This concept was created by Betty McLellan in Unspeakable (Spinifex Press, 2010, Australia) and promoted by Susan Hawthorne in Bibliodiversity : A Manifesto for Independent Publishing (Spinifex Press, 2014, Australia).

The International Alliance of Independent Publishers calls on all international solidarity organisations to mobilise in Haiti. The Alliance will do do its outmost to support Haitian book professionals in the long-term, particularly librarians, publishers and booksellers, by joining forces with existing and future stakeholders in Haiti.

The importance of culture should be considered in the reconstruction process. In the Haïtian context, where symbolism has a special place, reinventing Haïti also involves supporting the arts and culture, particularly books and authors that promote the people’s complex and fascinating identity. A people cut off from its culture is a dead people.

Il a créé par ailleurs son propre centre d’expertise et de conseil, le Centre d’expertises politiques et institutionnelles en Afrique (CEPIA). Depuis 2002, il coordonne l’Alliance pour refonder la gouvernance en Afrique.

The Spanish-language network and the Portuguse-language network of the Alliance met in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) from 25 till 27 November 2009, during « la Primavera dos livros ». These meetings allowed both networks to build their respective initiative programme for 2010-2011 but also to strengthen the « regionalisation » of the Alliance, through an inter-network meeting.

Cet ouvrage invite à découvrir les multiples visages d’un mouvement en pleine expansion qui cherche à retrouver l’humain derrière le consommateur, la communauté derrière le producteur et à redéfinir le lien social et politique entre ceux qu’on a trop longtemps réduits à des agents économiques désincarnés. En marge des critiques stériles qui l’assaillent ces dernières années, mais sans pour autant glisser dans un discours idéalisé, les auteurs offrent de réfléchir aux enjeux que le commerce équitable soulève en regard des appels à un commerce international plus juste et des possibilités d’un marché alternatif fondé sur d’autres valeurs.

Corinne GENDRON est professeure titulaire au département Stratégie, responsabilité sociale et environnementale à l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) et titulaire de la Chaire de responsabilité sociale et de développement durable. Elle a écrit plusieurs ouvrages et articles sur le commerce équitable ainsi que sur le développement durable et la responsabilité sociale. Elle intervient régulièrement en qualité d’experte auprès d’organismes privés et publics au Québec et à l’international.

Socio-économiste spécialisé en économie solidaire et en commerce équitable, Arturo PALMA TORRES est actuellement expert associé au CRIDA (France) et consultant au ministère du Développement agraire brésilien. Il est membre du mouvement pour l’économie solidaire en France et du réseau international ALOE (Alliance pour une économie pluriel, responsable et solidaire).

Titulaire d’une maîtrise en sciences de l’environnement, Véronique BISAILLPON est coordonnatrice de la Chaire de responsabilité sociale et de développement durable de l’École des sciences de la gestion de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM).

On Monday 12 October 2009, the Alliance brought together the five language network coordinators and six members of the Board. This meeting, prepared in advance by the permanent staff, was an opportunity to address several core issues for our movement. A French version of the minutes in full – including the verbatim of this long and exciting day of work – was sent to the participants. They wished however to have a communiqué, summing up the main points discussed and decisions taken together, drawn up in three languages for circulation among all members of the Alliance.

Avec une ironie mordante et un ton décalé, ce recueil de huit nouvelles évoque la déroute des jeunes États africains et les désillusions qui ont suivi les indépendances. Autant de portraits d’hommes et de femmes qu’Emmanuel Dongala parvient à saisir avec justesse et humanité. Le style est faussement naïf, les situations parfois loufoques... et si l’auteur s’autorise des échappées poétiques - liées à sa passion du jazz - le constat reste souvent pessimiste derrière l’humour doux-amer de l’écriture.

Né en 1941, Emmanuel Dongala a grandi au Congo-Brazzaville et vit aujourd’hui aux États-Unis. Il est l’auteur de plusieurs romans, dont Les petits garçons naissent aussi des étoiles et Johnny Chien Méchant, parus au Serpent à plumes.

Auteur sénégalais né en 1946, Boubacar Boris Diop s’est imposé comme un écrivain majeur de l’Afrique contemporaine. Il a écrit plusieurs romans, dont Murambi, Le livre des ossements (Stock, 1997) et Doomi Golo, écrit en wolof (Papyrus, 2003) et paru en français aux éditions Philippe Rey en 2009.

An incredible censorship attempt is endangering the very existence of the publisher Écosociété (Quebec – Canada) ; more than 60 publishers from 30 countries have declared their undivided support for the Quebec publisher and are calling on the pinstigators of the “Noir Canada” affair to respect the rights of freedom of expression and publication.

Through a step-by-step approach, with examples and a pedagogical method, Stéphane Marill gives a precious “vade mecum” for any publisher wishing to respond to a call for tenders in the school textbook industry.

Why did the large majority of European countries choose to protect the book, setting its price through trade agreements or legal measures ? How were these protection mechanisms, which make the book into a cultural exception permitted by the European Commission, gradually implemented ? Markus Gerlach offers a broad analysis the price-fixing of books in Europe : he begins by relating the background of this measure and then analyzes the economic effects. In the end he shows the extent to which the price-fixing of books, apart from its cultural and economic importance, also assumes an eminently political dimension.

Far from being a caricature, developing a reasoning based on his personal conception of publishing, Gilles Colleu explores some of the characteristics of a typical independent publisher.
What do we mean by independent publisher ? Are they necessarily small concerns ? Can a major group be independent ? In a context of concentration and increasing dominance of financial considerations, how can publishers remain independent while playing their crucial role of putting fresh ideas forward ?

Gilles Colleu is a former student of Jean-Marie Bouvaist and has taught alongside him on the Master course at Villetaneuse University. He is now an associate professor in the publishing professions department of the IUT in Aix-en-Provence. He founded the Vents d’ailleurs publishing house and manages it with Jutta Hepke, and for the past 20 years has acted as a consultant to publishers.

In this work, he stresses his conviction that publishing needs to be rooted in a long cycle of cultivation, to build a coherent catalogue and long-lasting business.

Luc Pinhas draws a comprehensive portrait of the state of publishing, including legislation, circulation, distribution and marketing of books in the French-speaking world. This dossier, featuring entries on many themes and geographic locations, provides a complete overview of local realities, illustrated with telling examples. After analysing measures that states, associations and syndicates of publishing and book-store professionals have implemented, the author puts forward some proposals to fuel a much-needed debate. African literature in French is today better represented and better known in Europe than in Africa, where its distribution remains hampered by many obstacles. However, there are solutions, which require the mobilisation of various stakeholders in the book industry. One solution is co-publishing, based on a joint trade agreement. The publication of « L’Ombre d’Imana » by Véronique TADJO, a groundbreaking example of pan-African co-publishing, proves that it is possible, through joint action, to create the conditions necessary for a (re)appropriation by Africa of its literature.
