Atlas for Publishing & Distribution

logoAtlas for Publishing & Distribution

Abed street, P. O. Box 8084
Damas
Syria
Tél: +963 11 44685250 / 4421010

Atlas Publishing was established in the late 1950s by Samar Haddad’s father, the present director of the publishing house. Atlas was one of the first bookshops in Damascus. In 1963, academic books were among the first works on its publishing list, followed shortly by many other titles. In 2002 Samar Haddad became the editor of Atlas and gradually took over as the head of the company. She remained true to her father’s motto: the book is the premier tool of knowledge and should therefore be within everyone’s reach. Atlas Publishing set up a translation division and a distribution division, while continuing to publish titles of relevance to readers, in keeping with an editorial policy promoting quality and the highest standards of technical production.

Atlas in Greek Mythology is the Titan who is condemned to hold the earth for eternity, and our logo shows him holding the Globe in one hand and a book in the other hand. This is the idea of my late father the founder of Atlas Publishers back in the fifties.

Baile del Sol is a publishing house located on the Canary Islands, off the coast of the African continent. It was established in 1992 in the form of a cultural association. Its founders had already been involved for a number of years in the cultural life of the Islands, as fanzine publishing editors, for Orín Desteñido, and for literary and music magazines, for Baile del Sol. The objectives of this association were retained throughout the years and Baile del Sol remains true to these to this day. On the one hand, we offer the chance to become published to new authors and, on the other, an increased effort so as local authors from the Canary Islands be considered for themselves and not because of their geographic origins. Our catalogue is additionally open to authors from other backgrounds. America, Oceania, Africa and Europe are all represented. We are, therefore, an open-minded and independent publishing house.

elyzad Publishing was established in Tunis in 2005. In this Mediterranean country, with its rich melting pot of cultures, we have chosen to share a vibrant, modern literature rooted in diversity. Novels and short stories reflect our commitment: providing a platform from the South to the North for remarkable voices, from here and elsewhere, to read the world in its plurality.
Our editorial policy, deliberately uncompromising, was developed in the course of productive meetings with established authors Leïla Sebbar, Maïssa Bey, Colette Fellous, and Théo Ananissoh, who have put their trust in us, and others from Tunis, Algeria, France, which we have discovered and have the pleasure of introducing.
Views of Arab society mingle with nomadic texts redolent of the north seas and southern breezes, the Balkans and Japan… above all, any kind of multifaceted writing that opens the door or offers a passage to new experiences.
In fact, our catalogue includes works co-published with Actes Sud and Zellige in France and Le Fennec in Morocco. It contains thirty titles and a new paperback collection.

Éditions Tarik, based in Casablanca, Morocco, is headed by Bichr Bennani and Marie-Louise Belarbi, both founder members of Apell (Association for the promotion of book publishing and reading). Since its inception in 1999, this independent publishing firm has been involved in the debates of the modern world. Its objective is to explore the themes of history and current events, of society and memory, without neglecting the literary production of young Moroccan authors, and by giving priority, whenever possible, to co-publishing.

Ku Si Mon Editora is a private institution created in Bissau in 1994, following the political liberalization and the beginning of multi-partisanism. Its principal interests are literature (novels, stories, and essays), oral tradition (collections of stories, proverbs, and riddles) and ethno-linguistics (dictionaries). With an artisanal character, it continues thanks to the volunteer work from its members. Overhead costs (facility, electricity, small publishing materials) are also assured by the members, and revenue is used to publish new titles. Sales are limited, taking into account the high rate of illiteracy in Guinea-Bissau, and the publishing house relies on occasional funding to print certain texts.

Boitempo is the title of a short poem by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, on the topic of his childhood. Naming our publishing house after this poem was a way of paying tribute to one of the greatest Brazilian poets. Founded in 1995, Boitempo has made its mark as a quality publisher, both in the choice of publications, and in the printing and presentation of the works. We seek to put together a consistent catalogue, with a clear-cut editorial line: human sciences, literature (acknowledged works and first-time writers), historical and contemporary essays. Our Web site www.boitempoeditorial.com.br presents an up-to-date version of our catalogue. We take great care in the publication of our works, and we strive to respect our readership.

Since 1987, Txalaparta has been the name of a free and independent Basque publisher. Txalaparta is committed to the cultural and editorial sovereignty of our country, Euskal Herria (the Basque Country). We also try to be the voice of whatever literary creation that improves the relations between the people of the planet, that helps to transform reality, that guards our historical memory, that opens paths towards diversity, to utopias…

We publish on average between 30 to 40 books a year in Basque and Spanish: Basque and world literature, political and historical essays, social criticism, classics of the political left, historical encyclopaedias. Our most distinctive feature is the wide base of readers who support Txalaparta´s projects by subscribing to one of our collections. Under the name of “editores independientes” we work and publish together with various publishers in other countries (Era in Mexico, LOM in Chile, Trilce in Uruguay) in order to guarantee our editorial freedom and diversity against monopolies and unified thought.
