Il participe ensuite à la reconnaissance du créole dans le milieu universitaire et scolaire par l’intermédiaire de la création du CAPES de créole. Fondateur du GEREC-F (Groupe de recherches et d’études en espace créole et francophone), il est l’auteur d’importants ouvrages dans le domaine de la syntaxe du créole, ainsi que de nombreux articles de sociolinguistique et de littérature.

Cultural Climate of Turkey

A collection of essays on Turkey’�s cultural climate in the last decades from a most insightful literary and cultural critic. The first two essays of this collection, “Life in the Shop Window” and “Return of the Repressed”, attend to the 80�’s � a period of radical economic, political and cultural change following the coup d�état of 1980. Nurdan Gürbilek argues that this was not only a period of oppression of speech but also a period of explosion of speech; an incitement to speech. A period when two seemingly opposed cultural strategies, the old one of repression, forbiddance and annihilation and the new one of provocation, assimilation and incorporation came together, weaving a cultural fabric that had significant results in shaping the cultural climate of modern Turkey. Gürbilek also argues that this was a period of cultural pluralism� - a result of the collapse of the modern Kemalist identity. Years of the “return of the repressed”; the voices that were previously repressed by the Kemalist project of modernization, the voices of the Islamic and Kurdish opposition, those of the lower and peripheral cultures, of women and queers and also the discourses of desire and sexuality returned to a relatively liberal cultural market ready to incorporate rather than suppress.
The following essays on Turkishness and evil explore the rather sinister cultural climate of the 1990�s and 2000�s when the efforts to redefine the Turkish identity predominated the cultural scene. She takes as her point of departure some of the significant images and tropes in modern Turkish literature and popular culture: popular arabesque songs of the 70s and 80s, the figure of the snob in modern Turkish literature, a news article on the death of a porn star, an oddly popular poster illustration, the child hero archetype in urban popular culture� With utmost care and justice Gürbilek weaves these into a keen understanding of their political, social and cultural significance, exploring Turkishness not as an autonomous and essentialist local truth but rather as an impasse always already shaped in relation to the modern world, as a double-bind that has always produced oppositional sentiments in the cultural sphere. This is where the desire to be the other coincides with the fear of losing one�s self in the other, where xenophilia is simultaneous with xenophobia, and the feeling of inadequacy is concurrent with a reflex of self-defense. And evil here has to do with the unleashing of all things dark and sinister when the liberal promise fails to deliver, when the shop windows cease to dazzle and the struggle for livelihood turns bitter in urban wilderness. Where do “Turkishness” and “evil” converge? And how do we gain insight into these moments of convergence?

In an ancient Mediterranean city, a tradition is maintained: every ten years an archaic game of human chess is staged, the players (visitors versus locals) bearing weapons. This archaic game, the central event of The Garden of the Departed Cats, may prove as fatal as the deadly attraction our narrator feels for the local man who is the Vizier, or Captain, of the home team. Their “romance” (which, though inconclusive, magnetizes our protagonist to accept the Vizier’s challenge to play) provides the skeletal structure of this experimental novel. Each of their brief interactions works as a single chapter. And interleaved between their chapters are a dozen fable-like stories. The folk tale might concern a 13^th-century herbal that identifies a kind of tulip, a “red salamander,” which dooms anyone who eats it to never tell a lie ever again. Or the tale might be an ancient story of a terrible stoat-like creature that feeds for years on the body of whomever it sinks its claws into, like guilt. These strange fables work independently of the main narrative but, in curious and unpredictable ways, (and reminiscent of Primo Levi’s The Periodic Table), they echo and double its chief themes: love, its recalcitrance, its cat-like finickiness, and its refusal to be rushed. The Garden of the Departed Cats is a work of peculiar beauty and strangeness, the whole layered and shiny like a piece of mica.

The World Tribunal on Iraq (WTI) was a collective effort involving hundreds of people worldwide, most of whom never met in person. About twenty sessions were held in various cities of the world, focusing on different aspects of the war on Iraq. The findings of these sessions were incorporated into a culminating session held in Istanbul on 23-27 June 2005. This book consists of the proceedings of that session.
A civilian initiative inspired by the Bertrand Russell Tribunal of the Vietnam Era, the WTI aimed to record the crimes committed in Iraq, to note the historical, economic and political reasons behind the invasion and occupation of Iraq, to document the extent as well as the details of the destruction caused, and to write a counter-history to that of the victors�. The texts in this volume, an assemblage of experts� and witnesses� testimonies, provides a comprehensive grasp on what an invasion today means.
We hope that this book, which is the result of a worldwide effort involving activists, lawyers and experts from diverse backgrounds, that is, a product of the global opposition to war, will feed back into the global movement, inspire new forms of resistance, providing information and grounds for action, be it for appeals to the International Criminal Court or the United Nations, or for the individual acts of resistance, including that of conscientious objectors.

Homunkulus: postmodern fairy tales for grownups
Homunculus is billed as a collection of sixteen “fairy tales for adults” with something for every reader. The author has largely retained the classical fairy-tale structure with its elements of surprise and the constant intertwining of the real and unreal, but he transcends the sugar-sweet endings we are familiar with. Prokopiev presents us with a wide range of more “mature” themes too – the erotic, the tragic, feelings of alienation. Some of the stories are related to internationally known fairy tales such as “Tom Thumb”, where the main character struggles with an oedipal bond with his mother, or “The Huntsman”, told from the perspective of the hunter sent out to kill Snow White. Others go back to Macedonian folk roots or have been freely composed by Prokopiev himself.

As one of the founders and key members of the band, he has nine studio releases, as well as music for over thirty theatrical performances and several documentary and feature films, including the Oscar nominee “Honeyland”, the internationally acclaimed “Secret Ingredient”, “Avec L’Amour”, “Cash & Marry” etc. He has performed in Croatia, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Russia, Montenegro, England, Lebanon, Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey and Czech Republic. Nikolov has received many recognitions and awards for his creative work. He is, without a doubt, one of the most original and charismatic individuals on Macedonian music scene today, known for his spontaneous, explosive, warm and passionate live performances. Apart from his work with Foltin, he has performed with Macedonian Philharmonic and has two poetry books published. Pijan Slavej is his first solo outing in music and poetry.

Emmanuel DERILUS

Ce tout premier roman d’Emmanuel Dérilus a paru en novembre 2021, dans la collection « Fiction EGL », aux Éditions Gouttes-Lettres, raconte l’histoire de la tournée de l’écrivain communiste Jacques Stephen Alexis à Moscou, (à Paris), en Chine et à la Havane, puis sa disparition (à son retour en Haïti) en avril 61, au Môle Saint-Nicolas, dans des circonstances jusqu’ici non élucidées.

• Le roman, dont le récit s’étend sur la fin année 1960 jusqu’à l’été 1961 et s’inspirant des hypothèses avancées sur sa disparition, montre comment les services secrets (américains, français et Haïtiens) traquent Jacques Stephen Alexis et sa délégation depuis Moscou jusqu’au Môle Saint Nicolas où ils disparaissent. Ce grand roman historique nous fait revivre nombre d’événements importants qui ont marqué l’histoire mondiale, tels la Révolte de Budapest en 1956, l’Invasion de la baie des cochons, en Avril 1961, ou les événements en Colombie et au Venezuela entre 1948 et 1961, le Congrès des 81 partis communiste à Moscou auquel a participé Jacques, ou encore la grève des étudiants de L’UNEH de 1960, enfin les décrets répressifs de François Duvalier des années 1960 - 1961.
• La trame tient compte de la conjoncture de l’époque marquée par les rivalités est-ouest pendant la Guerre Froide entre Kennedy et Khrouchtchev ; le jeu des services secrets dans la lutte contre le communisme - la CIA, le SD, les services secrets Français et Dominicains (intrigues, coups bas, intérêts géopolitiques) ; la grève des étudiants du début des années 1960 ; les luttes syndicales en Haïti en 1960 ; les luttes paysannes avec un leader paysan du nom de Sidieuveut sur fond de conflit entre la grande et la petite propriété foncière (deux schémas de développement agricole mis en perspective) et enfin ; la grande répression des années 60 contre toute opposition avec la bénédiction de Washington engagé dans la guerre froide et la lutte contre le communisme.

Emmanuel Dérilus
Né à Petite-Rivière de l’Artibonite, le 24 décembre 1959, Emmanuel Dérilus est diplômé en Droit à la Faculté de Droit et des Sciences Économiques de Port-au-Prince. Il a également suivi des cours à l’École Normale Supérieure, en Science de l’Éducation au CEFOSED et en Communication à l’Institut Supérieur de Journalisme et de Communication à Port-au-Prince. Ancien professeur de Littérature haïtienne, d’Histoire et de Géographie, il fut membre du Parti du Congrès National des Mouvements Démocratiques, le CONACOM. Élu député au Parlement haïtien en 1995, Emmanuel Dérilus militait au sein du Bloc parlementaire anti-néolibéral où il œuvrait à l’unité de la gauche démocratique en Haïti.

Ce premier roman de Dom Pedro N. THEONEY est un roman philosophique. (Dom) Pedro Naason Theoney est né le 04 novembre 1986, à Port-au-Prince (Delmas). Au bout de ses études secondaires au lycée Pierre Eustache Daniel Fignolé, il est entré en 2009 à l’École Normale Supérieure de Port-au-Prince où il a eu une importante formation en philosophie. En 2013, il est admis au programme de Master de Philosophie Paris8/ENS. Mais il ne le bouclera pas, en raison de maintes et maintes pressions de la vie (haïtiennes)… Depuis quelques années, il enseigne la philosophie dans certaines écoles à Port-au-Prince. En 2014, il a fondé les Éditions Gouttes-Lettres, une maison d’édition généraliste au service des communautés d’intellectuel.les, de créateurs/trices et de lecteurs.trices, haïtiennes, voire du monde entier. Entre 2018 et 2019, il a publié ses deux premiers livres, “Les délices de la chair”, qui est un roman philosophique, et un long poème (pro)féministe, intitulé “Hymne à la femme”. Donc depuis son entrée à l’E.N.S., les livres, l’écriture, l’édition, et bien sur sa famille, constituent ce qu’il appelle sa raison de vivre.

Cet essai met en relation l’émergence des marxismes non occidentaux et la publication dans les années 1930 d’un ensemble d’œuvres de Marx qui ont mis au premier plan le thème de la dépossession et de l’aliénation. L’objectif consiste à expliquer la prédominance de la problématisation de l’aliénation dans le monde noir en se référant aux thèses développées dans les Manuscrits de 1844. La publication intégrale de ces Manuscrits axés sur une théorie de l’aliénation permet aux intellectuels du sud de reformuler au prisme d’éléments psychologiques (et culturels) leurs marxismes. Ainsi, cet essai postule que l’appropriation haïtienne des œuvres de Marx et d’Engels est ancrée dans une relecture originale de la catégorie d’aliénation. Le titre Marxisme et aliénation opte pour ce croisement entre les marxismes du sud et la problématique de dépossession. Le couple « marxisme et aliénation » permet de saisir le mode de conceptualisation de ces marxismes non occidentaux, notamment du marxisme haïtien. La pensée de Marx reste un chantier à retravailler au regard des expériences singulières et de « territoires » différents. Faire de l’aliénation l’axe central de l’analyse des marxismes du Sud se justifie par l’importance du colonialisme, de l’esclavage et du racisme dans l’histoire des Caraïbes.
