AGO Media is a team of young writers and illustrators brought together by Koffivi ASSEM and KanAd for the production and distribution of comics and animated films. AGO Media is composed of a publishing house, a communication agency and a production and distribution company for books and films.
Lomé-based AGO publishing wants to make up for the lack of publishing houses specialized in children’s books and comics in Africa.
Before the official foundation of the company in 2011, AGO started with the publication of fanzines: “AGO fiction” and “AGO drama”. This is how the company’s strategy was defined: to fund the publishing wing through the communication agency, to diversify the revenues by venturing into multimedia and cinema and especially to create an authentic distribution circuit.

Between the Lines (BTL) was established in 1977 and is a fiercely independent small press. At BTL we remain committed to our original mandate: to publish Canadian-authored non-fiction on a broad range of social and cultural issues from a progressive perspective. Our corresponding mission is to provide high quality resources that promote equitable social change. We specialize in informative, non-fiction books on politics and public policy, social issues, Canadian and world history, international development, Indigenous issues, gender/sexuality, critical race issues, labour and work, environment, and media. BTL books amplify the voices that often go unheard in the mainstream and challenge our readers to think differently. Our Editorial Committee makes publishing decisions democratically by consensus.

Between the Lines asks people to read critically, to think about the world differently, and not to get stuck in factional party lines.

Ediciones del Ermitaño, Editorial Division of Solar Servicios Editoriales, is backed by the experience and prestige of over 29 years in the market and a growing collection of poetry, short stories, novels, and other genres. When the possibility of using digital technology emerged in the editorial world, Ediciones del Ermitaño was the first to create a collection that fully takes advantage of that technology. And so “Minimalia”, our main collection, was born, in which we have published over 250 titles and which has sold thousands of copies. We never run out of any title, since we have the capacity to reprint according to the needs and demand; this has allowed us to open the doors to many young writers who have been able to publish their first, and very promising, works, side by side with the accomplished writers that also are part of our catalog. Thus, the “Minimalia” collection has been a pioneer and a platform for experimentation that established the example and marked new guidelines. It is a collection that explores and explodes the new digital technologies surrounding composition and production, in order to create new paradigms that carry the word from the authors to ultimately thousands of readers.

Sirocco publishing was created in 2007 in Casablanca to support, unearth, and amplify Moroccan voices of yesterday or today. Their editorial choices are essentially guided by a passion for Morocco, its history, its heritage, its culture in its various expressions, without excluding other perspectives from the southern Mediterranean. Their list, including some co-publishing projects, is francophone and generalist. It is unique in that it reflects the enthusiasm of discoveries and encounters, built at their own pace. Recipient in 2013 of the Grand Atlas Prize (category Francophone essays) awarded to one of their publications, Sirocco Publishing now also publishes literature.

Modjaji Books

Box 121, Rondebosch, 7701
Cape Town
South Africa
Tél: +27 72 77435 46
www.modjajibooks.co.za

Modjaji Books is an independent feminist press that publishes southern African women writers. Modjaji Books fills a gap by providing a platform for serious and ground-breaking writing by new and established women writers with brave voices. We publish short stories, novels, memoir, biography, poetry, essays, narrative non-fiction, reference books and relevant non-fiction.

The history of publishing in South Africa is enmeshed with the culture of resistance that flourished under apartheid. Struggle literature may have emerged from the underground, but women’s voices and particularly black women’s voices – are still marginalized. Modjaji Books addressed this inequality by publishing books that are true to the spirit of Modjaji, the rain queen: a powerful female force for good, new life and regeneration.

In a few short years, Modjaji titles have won a number of prizes or been short-listed for prizes. The prizes include the Ingrid Jonker prizes for debut poetry, short-listings for the Sunday Times fiction prize, several SALA prizes as well as a short-listing for the Caine Prize.

Modjaji is the name of the Rain Queen in the northern part of South Africa. As South Africa is mostly a dry country - rain is very important!

Globalisation, new information and communication technologies and individualisation are all radically overturning how people live and work, what they think and believe. L’Atelier hopes to help humanise this transformation, by encouraging the re-establishment of social ties and by making it possible for people from humble backgrounds to take a proactive stance in their own lives, through the publication of books in three fields: Christianity; culture and religion; social and human sciences.
True to the tradition of Editions Ouvrières, a publishing firm set up by the Young Christian Workers movement in 1929, L’Atelier aims to promote works that bridge different spheres of knowledge, that which is forged by experience as well as that which results from analytical work, for books to act as an agent of emancipation and enrichment of social ties for as many people as possible.

Founded in 1982, Metis Publishers has established itself as one of Turkey’s leading
publishing houses, renowned for defending its independent spirit and radical commitment, celebrating critical thinking, original talent, and bringing distinguished letters from the world to generations of Turkish readers. With over 800 titles to its name, Metis is reputed for its careful translations and editorial integrity.

Metis list includes both fiction and nonfiction, specializing in high literature and critical theory. Some of the literary authors published in translation are Ursula K. LeGuin, Marguerite Yourcenar, Salman Rushdie, Henry Bauchau, Georges Perec, John Berger, J.R.R. Tolkien and Maurice
Blanchot. The works of such distinguished Turkish authors as Murathan Mungan and Bilge Karasu are also published by Metis.

Metis nonfiction list features works of an interdisciplinary character that
have the potential to intervene in the cultural climate of Turkey from a
radical political perspective, such as those by Walter Benjamin, Max
Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, Edward Said, Immanuel Wallerstein, Emile Cioran, Slavoj Zizek, Judith Butler, Nurdan Gürbilek and Nilüfer Göle. World-class literary theorists including Gyorgy Lukacs, Tzvetan Todorov and Mikhail Bakhtin, philosophers such as Paul Ricoeur, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Roland Barthes and psychoanalytic masters including Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, Melanie Klein and Heinz Kohut are also amongst the authors Metis has published in Turkey.

Metis was the Goddess of Wisdom, first wife of Zeus, before he swallowed her up when she was pregnant and gave “birth” through his forehead to the next Goddess of Wisdom, Athena, who was “born from a man, fully armed”, whereas Metis was against the use of arms, worked with the knowledge of nature and used the skill of the craftsperson to solve disputes, like a captain navigating rocky waters.
Hence metis came to signify the “knowledge that the Power detests”, in addition to nobody, bastard, craftiness...

Jamana

logoJamana

Avenue Cheik Zahed, porte 2694, Hamdalaye
BP 2043 Bamako
Mali
Tél: (+223) 20 29 62 89

Jamana is an organization of the Jamana Multimedia Cultural Cooperative. The company was created in 1988 to fill a void, because, at that time, there was only one publishing house, and it was state run.
Jamana was therefore Mali’s first private publishing firm. Jamana gives priority to publications geared toward young people and women in the national languages. It aims at being accessible to all Malian and foreign authors. Because we are aware that our country’s sustainable development requires the promotion of national languages, we strongly encourage their use in the education system. Over the past few years, particular focus has been put on publishing books for young people, as well as pre-education, textbooks, extracurricular, and academic books. Our battle against illiteracy finds expression in the promotion of our cultures and the defence of an economically viable publishing industry. As part of our pan-African aim, we encourage all kinds of partnerships: co-publishing, distribution, adaptation of books, copyright sale. Co-publishing has also grown somewhat, because we believe that the salvation of the African publishing industry necessarily depends on developing partnerships between African and foreign publishers.

Switzerland

The éditions d’en bas (“from below”) published its first books in 1976, organised itself as an association in 1976 and then as a cooperative in 1991. In 28 years, more than 300 books have been published. The publishing house is founded on two pillars: a militant base of people who have adhered to the editorial policy, and the network of bookshops in the country. The output and translation of books is partly funded by state and private institutions/foundations, as well as by partnerships (co-publishing) with various non-governmental organisations and social movements. The books published by the editions d’en bas witness the hidden side of Switzerland, especially life “down below” in the working-class community. They can also serve in some cases as tools in the fight for rights; they can precede and accompany social struggles, or tell their story.
Essays and historical, sociological and political documents, testimonies, life stories, literary texts, translations – the books published by the éditions d’en bas explore the social field from the margins of history, politics, and society; they allow for the emergence of singular voices, of forgotten destinies and themes.

Founded in 2003 by Isabelle Pivert, éditions du Sextant publishes works in the humanities field – history, geography, history of thought and political science – with the aim of enlightening readers to help them gain insight into the world, position themselves and pursue their own path.
Our collections follow their own paths (and overlap?) joyfully: “Décodeur” (economic, social, political criticism: essays), “Géographique” (interactions between physical space and humankind and/or society: essays, biographies, travel accounts), “Résistance” (accounts, especially of WW2), “Récits” (accounts, especially on social issues). In the “Hors Piste” (“Off the Beaten Track”) collection, Sextant experiments and publishes their favourites in a “ragbag” collection.

Based in Paris, we are also developing a branch in Brittany (2008), in a place that’s propitious to creative processes and thinking, Le Pouldu.

Since 1976, éditions du remue-ménage has been pursuing the same aim: stimulating, supporting, and furthering feminist thought. Alongside activists, researchers, writers, and artists, they have set up a propitious arena for the circulation of thinking outside of the predominant mindset. An ever-moving platform, open to various feminist analyses of theory and politics, considering the preoccupations of women from all horizons. The catalogue reflects these editorial choices, featuring works in a variety of fields such as history, sociology, political science, education, literature, culture, and gay and lesbian studies to name but a few. The sheer diversity of topics reflects the myriad questions affecting women and more broadly, society as a whole. éditions du remue-ménage is a vociferously free and feistily militant business.
The éditions du remue-ménage is fiercely committed to producing literature brimming with ideas, providing an arena for debate, and, like the women’s movement, working to build a fairer world.

Founded in April 2000 in Algiers, Barzakh originally focused solely on literature. Our creed: give young Arabic- and French-language writers a platform for expression.
Encountering success and setbacks over the years, we have expanded our catalogue to historical essays, studies and literary biographies, as well as high-art books. Alongside this work, we have developed partnerships with some French publishers, including éditions de l’Aube, Le Bec en l’Air, and Actes Sud. Thus, Arezki Mellal’s novel Maintenant, ils peuvent venir (Barzakh, 2000) was published by Actes Sud in 2002, and Cinq fragments du désert by Rachid Boudjedra (Barzakh, 2001), by éditions de l’Aube in 2002. The latter has furthermore been translated into Italian and Spanish.
