Wijaya HERLAMBANG
“When normality is built atop mass graves, and secured by terror and lies, a moral vacuum is inevitable. Wijaya Herlambang brilliantly analyses both the historical development and discursive dynamics of this vacuum.”
— Joshua Oppenheimer, director of the award-winning documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence
The persistence of anti-communism in Indonesia was not only a result of years of political campaigning by the New Order regime, but also of cultural aggression against communism, particularly through the justification of the violence against the alleged communist members in 1965-1966.
By discussing how the New Order and its cultural agents utilised cultural products –literary works, school textbooks and films—in legitimating violence against communists, this book attempts to explore the ways in which the 1965-1966 massacre was normalised.
A controversial bestseller upon its release, this book reveals the previously unknown ties between Indonesian literary giants like Goenawan Mohamad and Mochtar Lubis with CIA-backed Congress for Cultural Freedom and its agents in Asia. It also analyses the resistance of contemporary cultural organizations in Indonesia against the anti-communist legacies of the New Order.

Winner of the Khatulistiwa Literary Award 2017
“This is a story that happened not so long ago. A grim tale full of blood. Just about two times village chief’s elections ago, probably right after the government party won for the first time against Islamic party around here.”
Thus how Warto Kemplung began his story to whoever wanted to listen to him on the coffee stall: a love story between Mat Dawuk and Inayatun, an ugly withdrawn youngster and a beautiful flirtatious girl—controversial couple disdained by their own neighborhood, with social life in a remote Javanese village as a background, an idyllic life that was transformed heavily by cash crop, illegal logging and job as migrant workers in Malaysia.
The problem is: was there any truths on Warto’s story, or was it just a babbling nonsense to cover up his own past?
A powerful novel told with humor, actions and rhytms of Hindi movies—from the erudite pen of a rising star in Indonesian literary scene.

Saras DEWI
Environmental ethics and movements have accurately demonstrated the various damages and degradation of nature due to human activities. The anthropocentric worldview has been blamed as the source of disequilibrium between men and nature.
However, ethical approach to the problem of disequilibrium is no longer sufficient. There must be a new and vigorous method to solve the crux of the matter. Ecophenomenology proposes new ontology towards human and nature. Through the philosophies of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, ecophenomenology aims to a more rigorous argument to investigate the relation between human and nature, enables us to think a more radical problem of disequilibrium.
“[The author] believes that philosophy is conscience, and intellectual arguments were built upon that. This book was written to defend Benoa Bay from the threat of reclamation.” — Bali Post

Shih-Li KOW
This cross-genre collection of twenty-five short stories and flash fiction pieces explores relationships and periods of transition.
A mother questions the limits of her responsibility to her husband and son. A man operates a leaf blower during Chinese New Year, leading to tragic consequences. In speculative stories, a demolition worker dreams of clean air while Kuala Lumpur decays, and a cooking robot attempts to perfect its fried rice for a grieving family.
These characters navigate displacement and uncertainties in pursuit of better lives.
By the award-winning author of Ripples and Other Stories and the novel The Sum of Our Follies, this new collection boldly imagines scenarios we can only dream of – while subtly tethering us to Malaysian realities we can only sigh at.
Shih-Li Kow is the author of two short story collections and a novel. Ripples and Other Stories was shortlisted for the 2009 Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award. Her second book, The Sum of Our Follies, is also available in Italian, French and Bulgarian. The French edition (tr. Frederic Grellier) won the 2018 Prix du Premier Roman Étranger. Alerta: greenwashing.

This bilingual book in Portuguese and eMakwa isn’t about princesses, fairies, witches, monsters, talking animals, superheroes or folklore legends. Nor does the story take place in some faraway kingdom or centuries ago. Cora is a child like any other and lives in the real world just like the rest of us. She goes to school, has friends, a family and loves to play. But Cora is left intrigued by what her friend Miriam said: «You’d better wear a headband.» The thread of this story is as wavy has the child’s hair.

Chrysoula GEORGOULA
The book «Call me Stratos» is the first novel by Chrysoula Georgoula. Through the actions and memories of the main protagonist, Greece is described during the prosperity of the Olympic Games, but also after the economic crisis. Questions are posed such as: Are violence, discrimination and racism a consequence of the economic crisis or are they components of established social life, who find the opportunity to emerge on the occasion of the situation? Is a reversal of the tide possible, or will our society sooner or later be forced to relive its history?
After his dramatic divorce and at the age of forty-two, Stratos Achtidis returns to his family home to live with his mother and his also divorced brother. Humiliated and cut off from family and friends, he drinks uncontrollably and reminisces about the past: his construction work, his marriage to Sotiria and their children, the carefree years of fake wealth and parties, his extramarital affair and the end of it, the post-Olympic years of unemployment and his alcohol addiction, the privately owned Tsunami car wash and financial ruin, and finally his involvement with the «pure-blooded Greeks».

Aleksandar PROKOPIEV
Homunkulus: postmodern fairy tales for grownups
Homunculus is billed as a collection of sixteen “fairy tales for adults” with something for every reader. The author has largely retained the classical fairy-tale structure with its elements of surprise and the constant intertwining of the real and unreal, but he transcends the sugar-sweet endings we are familiar with. Prokopiev presents us with a wide range of more “mature” themes too – the erotic, the tragic, feelings of alienation. Some of the stories are related to internationally known fairy tales such as “Tom Thumb”, where the main character struggles with an oedipal bond with his mother, or “The Huntsman”, told from the perspective of the hunter sent out to kill Snow White. Others go back to Macedonian folk roots or have been freely composed by Prokopiev himself.
Aleksandar Prokopiev born on February 24, 1953 in Skopje is a Macedonian Ph. D. in comparative literature and literary theory. He is also notable as a writer, essayist and a former member of the eminent Yugoslav rock band Idoli.
Aleksandar Prokopiev is considered to be one of most acclaimed macedonian writers. He is two time nominated for prestigous literature award Balkanika.
Aleksandar Prokopiev is winner of literature award Balkanika in 2012 for his novel Homunkulus. Aleksandar Prokopiev is winner of Bulgarian literature award Helikon.
Finished postgraduate education in 1982 in Sorbonne, France. His works are translated in English, French, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak and many other languages.
